Dog bite prevention program

"The best way to protect our children is to teach them to protect themselves"

It's innovative and interactive

Delivered through schools, child care centres and community groups, the d o g Wise bite prevention program is innovative and interactive. Children will learn to read basic dog body language and how to act safely around dogs by looking at large format photographs, learning a mantra and by playing games.

Unique in its teaching strategies

The program is unique in its use of several different teaching strategies, its focus on physical activity and its emphasis on positive messages. Instead of telling children “don’t do this and don’t do that”, the d o g Wise program empowers them with the knowledge they need to make safe decisions based on the body language and the actions of the dog and the situation at hand. In this program we aim to help children identify behaviours that they themselves display, and to understand why dogs react the way they do.

Nothing is foolproof when it comes to teaching children how to stay safe around dogs, but with some simple, age-appropriate techniques we can equip our children with knowledge and in doing so, empower them to recognise unfavourable or threatening circumstances and to take care of themselves.

Given the close relationships we form with dogs in our everyday lives it is astonishing that the only education given to children about dogs is generally AFTER an unfortunate encounter when prevention would be a much more beneficial option. Safer for the child, safer for the dog and perhaps we may even prevent some cruel behaviours sometimes exhibited by children towards animals.
